The Captain has been compensated for this post by the good people at MilkPEP. As a proud member of the Milk family, I am working specifically with The National Milk Mustache “got milk?” and the Protein Fight Club Campaigns. Though I have been paid for this writing, it is my full intention to provide you with information and (attempts) at humor that you are accustomed to here at Tales From The Poop Deck.
It is week 4 – my last week as a Protein Fight Club Ambassador. This week I would like to take a little trip down memory lane.
Breakfast is indeed my favorite meal, and I think that there is a simple reason. When The Captain was a little lad, I spent a lot of time with my grandfather, Poppy as I called him, on the weekends. Just about every Saturday we would go on an adventure. We went to flea markets, mainly, but also traveled to electronic stores, his workplace (he fixed machines – I still don’t know what those machines did), and a plethora of other places.
Saturdays were long days. We generally left the house by 7 am, if not earlier, and would not return until the street lights came back on at night. I was his sidekick, his assistant, his partner in crime. The days were filled with work and even more fun – but they always began with breakfast.
The best days started in Poppy’s kitchen. His favorite thing was a healthy stack of pancakes which he always paired with a large glass of milk. Some Saturdays began at my house, and when Poppy would get there he always said the same thing with a smile and a chuckle, “Hey, fella. Gimme a glass of Milk. We’ve got work to do.”
And we would work, and play, hard. When we went to his job he put me to work. I vacuumed, I cleaned, I organized parts – I never fixed machines. We were constantly lifting and moving objects -especially at the flea market.
But every morning started the same way. He told me that we had to eat some breakfast, and no matter what we ate – we always had a glass of Milk. I remember that he used to pretend to be the Incredible Hulk – he would take a sip of Milk, slam his cup down, and his eyes would start to bulge behind his large framed glasses, he would pretend to shake and flex, and then he would laugh. He told me that one day I would grow up and be bigger and stronger than he was.
Turns out, Poppy may have been the original Protein Fight Club Ambassador. He loved Milk.
He was definitely on to something. I don’t know if he knew it or not, but by starting off with a high quality protein in the morning, and spreading the consumption of your daily protein throughout the day, can help to optimize how your body uses it.
There are a number of amazing recipes at The Breakfast Project that you should check out. The two that I think would have been perfect for a Saturday with my grandfather? The Pumpkin Pancakes or the Berry Burst Smoothie. Both recipes are delicious punches of protein meant to start your day right.
The eight grams of high quality protein and nine essential nutrients in Milk definitely help you to win your day. Poppy and I always won Saturdays – except for that one day that he got us lost, but that was more about his refusal to ask for directions.
It has been a pleasure serving as your Protein Fight Club Ambassador. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go grab my Milk and my breakfast (it is 4 am). I’ve got work to do:)
For now…Captain out.
