I have partnered with Milk to bring you information about the Holiday Give Together and The Great American Milk Drive. Though I have been compensated for this post, my thoughts and words are my own.
It’s amazing the perspective a simple question can offer. One year, on a Monday after Thanksgiving, a co-worker of mine posed a simple question to his students: The canned food drive was a great success, but those same people are still hungry and thirsty. Now what?
It served as a great reminder that we still have work to do. It was a pleasure, and an honor, to witness the launch of The Great American Milk Drive back in 2014, a collaborative effort between Feeding America and the country’s milk companies and dairy farmers to provide the nationwide network of 200 food banks and over 60,000 food pantries with nutrient-rich milk. One that is still ongoing because the need is still ongoing.
To date, more than 9.8 million servings of milk have been donated, but there is still need for more.
There are people, in all of our cities, who are still hungry, still thirsty. Still here. And through The Great American Milk Drive, we can help get milk to those who need it.
There are more than 46 million food-insecure Americans (including approximately 12 million children). One of the most requested items is milk, and, yet, it is one of the least donated items. On average, food bank clients receive the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per year. One gallon.
