When I started this voyage over 8 years ago, there were a number of things I couldn’t have imagined.
I couldn’t have imagined that I would have amassed a community of friends and peers that have materialized out of their avatars like some sort of science fiction tale.
I couldn’t have imagined that I would be able to travel to places simply because of something that I had written.
I couldn’t have imagined that someone would pay me real money for writing (though that has always been a goal).
I couldn’t have imagined that the Rock would actually mention my name and know who I was for at least 5 minutes.
I couldn’t have imagined that I would have the opportunity to improve myself as a dad, husband, or father because of experiences with strangers.
I also couldn’t have imagined how tiring, harrowing, or daunting the stormy waters of fatherhood could be – or, more importantly, how rewarding.
I couldn’t imagine the bittersweet dance of teaching my kids not to need me, yet providing them support.. Or the heartache of not having the answers or not having the solution. Or not being able to solve a crisis with a band aid and a kiss.
I couldn’t have imagined just how amazing a mother my wife would be – I knew she would be good, but man is she phenomenal.
I couldn’t have imagined the joy of driving a minivan packed full of friends, or cooking the breakfast feast the morning after a slumber party.
There’s a lot still to discover. Parenthood may not be the final frontier, but it certainly is a new discovery every day. And because of that, I will continue to write and share.
As you may have noticed, our site has changed slightly. No longer do we fly the flag of the Poop Deck. Yes, technically, the tales are still from the Poop Deck (which IS a true nautical term), but we are changing our colors slightly to fly the banner of My Captain’s Log.
The content will still cover parenting, travel, entertainment, and much more. But now that the kids are older, there are some tales that will be kept privately within the crew.
There will still be humor and fun. Granted, you can take the Captain out of the Poop Deck, but you can’t take the Poop Deck out of the Captain – or something like that. (That sounded much better in my head.)
In the meantime, welcome to our newest vessel “My Captain’s Log”. There’s always room for you and a friend. Join us on this voyage as we see where the winds take us through parenthood.
Thanks for reading and stay tuned for a few more adjustments to the new site. If you haven’t already subscribed, go ahead and hit that button now. We have some fun adventures ahead this summer.
That’s it for now. Captain – Out.
