Captain’s Log. Daddy Chronicles. Diaper Date 1572. New Years Day. A day of rebirth, tradition, and celebration. The eldest was so tuckered out from her attempt to ring in the New Year last night, that she didn’t nap until late in the afternoon. Not a problem, right? Wrong. A late nap means late bedtime. Late bedtime means reduced bedtime for the Captain and Mrs. Captain – which means EVERYBODY will be tired tomorrow.
The girl did not fall asleep until 10:30.
The Captain had illusions of popping some popcorn (hot air – only way to go) and watching Sunday Night Football. Instead, what was I doing? A modified stakeout in the eldest’s room as she fought sleep like a champ. It got to the point that she was watching me fall asleep. This sparked my competitive spirit. So there we were sitting in the near dark – staring at each other. Daring one to fall asleep.
Of course, I was the only one with a smartphone handy. The sleep embargo gave me an opportunity to work on my New Year’s goal – to save the world. While I am spinning a bit of a hyperbole here, I do intend to find ways to have more of a positive impact on my world.
This may not be the most original idea, but the Captain is looking into finding ways to recycle. Our community trash pickup does not offer it as part of the regular service. Of course, for a nominal fee you are welcome to partake. My question is this – If we are so concerned about our nonrenewable resources then why isn’t recycling part of our standard service? Why is it not required? After having located a few drop-off centers, I have decided the first way I am going to save the world is by recycling some of our trash. I still need to figure out some of the logistics, but it seems like it is a feasible mission.
While I sat and pondered, the girl continued to fight sleep. Her stomach hurt, she was hungry, her neck itched, she needed a night light, she needed her back rubbed, she wanted a story, she wanted a book – she wanted anything but sleep.
Finally, she agreed to take a book in bed and read to herself. What did she choose? Not a picture book. She picks a short novel. This is perfect. Why? Because she can’t read. Sure enough about 10 minutes later the eldest is out.
As soon as I make my way down to the couch and the football game…the diaper dweller is awake and angry. I rock him to sleep and five minutes later I am back to the game and my recycling research. The first step of amelioration is recycling. The second might be learning how to hypnotize children so that they will go to sleep earlier…but we will save that for another day.
Captain out.
