I hate New Years Resolutions. Why? It’s simple – they usually contradict each other. For example, there is the cliche of losing weight. And the simple one of “being happier”. Guess what? The source of my happiness will undo the whole losing weight thing. Yes, my family makes me happy – don’t judge me or misunderstand me there. But you know what else makes me happy (not on the same scale as my family and friends)? Food. Burgers. Wings. Greasy food. I love it. Yes, I know moderation is key, but it still contradicts edict number one – lose weight.
So I have decided I am going a different route this year. I am going to set one New Year’s goal and make one resolution.
The goal is a word – ameliorate: which means improvement. The Captain’s goal is to improve this year. And there is a lot to improve upon.
The resolution? I’m aiming big. What is the saying? Einstein, I believe, said “It is better to aim for the stars and miss than to aim for the gutter and hit it.” So I am aiming high.
In 2012, the Captain is on a mission to save the world. Superheros status.
Now before you have me committed, I’m not talking second coming or from a galatic attack. Instead, I’m thinking of Ghandi’s quote, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” (Wow that’s the second quote from a smart person. We better be careful, people might get the wrong idea about our blog.)
As a father, I want my kids to be better off than I am. My parents certainly did that for me. Now it is my turn.
So as that ball drops tonight, start thinking, “What can you do to improve things?”
Got some ideas? The Captain does. And I will share them with you (pregnant pause soap opera term) next year!
In the meantime, do you have a word to define a goal for next year? If you do, share it in the comments below. Or tweet the Captain @acjlist We would love to hear them.
Have a safe celebration tonight. If you are drinking, don’t drive. See you next year. Captain out.
P.S. We are still climbing the charts. The Captain’s Log is now #11. Place your vote here. Thanks!
